In Snorri’s account [of Ragnarok] the gods are not grand warriors. Instead they are self-defeated, their every action reeking of futility. By the time Heimdal blows his horn and Odin puts on his golden helmet, the world has been overrun by evil. The gods know they are doomed. Yet they march bravely into battle anyway, Thor shoulder to shoulder with Odin, facing the serpent and the wolf with bitter courage.
